Ireland is made up of four provinces. They are Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster. In the past, there were five provinces. Counties Meath, Westmeath, Offaly, Longford and parts of Louth made up the fifth province. That is why the Irish word for province is ‘cúige’ meaning one fifth. There are thirty two counties in Ireland.
