What is transport infrastructure?

Transport infrastructure refers to the framework that supports our transport system.

This includes roads, railways, ports and airports. National and local government are responsible for the development of our transport infrastructure .

Roads in Ireland

Co. Monaghan Bypass

In the past, Irish roads were bumpy, narrow and winding.
Since Ireland joined the EU in 1973, this has begun to change and many new roads are now being built.

To allow traffic to move quickly and avoid traffic jams, special roads called bypasses have been built around many towns and cities.

Motorways are also being built. The M50 encircles Dublin on its western outskirts and links with the M4 to the West, the M1 to the North and the M11 to the South .

There are very few exits or entrances on to motorways. The maximum speed on motorways is 120km/h.
