Michael Davitt is a very important man in Irish history. He was born and had his early childhood in Straide, Co. Mayo.
Davitt spent his life fighting for the right of Irish tenants to fair treatment from their landlords. In the nineteenth century, most Irish people lived on small farms, and had to pay very high rents to wealthy landlords. They were often treated unfairly and were very poor.
