What to do

County Tipperary is one of six counties that make up the province of Munster. Is it sometimes referred to as The Premier County.

It is 4,303 kms squared in size and is divided into two administrative areas called North Tipperary and South Tipperary. Nenagh is the county town for the northern area while Clonmel is the principal town in the south of the county.

Tipperary has a lot of local neighbours and shares a border with no fewer than eight other counties. They are Offaly, Laois and Kilkenny from Leinster, Waterford, Cork, Limerick and Clare in Munster and Galway in Connacht.

Population

According to the census in 2006, the population for North Tipperary is 66,023 and for South Tipperary is 83,221. This makes a combined figure for the county of 149,224. This shows an increase of 9,093 or 6.5% from the corresponding figure in 2002.

The population of Tipperary makes up for close to 13% of the whole population of the province of Munster.

Geography

A very important aspect of Tipperary's geography is the presence of the Golden Vale. This is an area of very fertile land, which has helped to make agriculture a very important part of Tipperary life.

Most of the emphasis on agriculture has been of the dairy variety but crops such as sugar beet, wheat and corn have all been grown in large quantities down the years.
