Changes in Building Materials

Very different building materials are used in new houses today than in the past. All doors and windows were once made from timber, like those shown below in these terraced houses in Thurles.

Today, doors and windows are often made from a very strong metal called aluminium, or a special type of plastic called PVC. These last for a very long time and they do not rot, as can happen with timber.

New homes are also much warmer because of central heating and insulation, which keeps the heat in houses.
