From the 1940s right up until 1960, special late night trains ran from Waterford to the Tramore dance halls. These trains were known locally as the 'dance trains'.

© Waterford City LibraryThe combined train and dance ticket entitled the holder to take one of the trains out to Tramore and admission to the Atlantic Ballroom.
Dancing went on until 2:00 a.m. and dance goers could catch the last train back to Waterford at 3:00 a.m. It was not unknown for a few of the revellers to take a walk on the beach and miss the train home! The last of the special late night 'dance trains' ran on August 23rd 1960.
