Cork is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland. The census of 2002 showed that 123,000 people live in Cork city.

Today, many thousands of people live in new suburbs outside the city limits. For example, in the last 30 years, Carrigaline has grown from having a population of less than 1,000 to being a large urban town with a population of more than 10,000 people.
