There are approximately 60,000 people in Ireland who speak Irish as their first language. Most of these live in Gaeltacht areas across the country. Summer schools in the Gaeltacht allow young people to learn Irish through everyday use. This 'out of class' use of Irish is considered to be very important for users.  Of the non school going population outside the Gaeltacht, only 2.6% speak Irish on a daily basis. But there an increasing number of night classes for available for people who wish to learn the language.
