Did you know where plastic that is not recycled ends up? It might be any of these three places:

·          Landfill sites

A landfill is where rubbish is dumped in a land area.

·          Ocean dumping

This is when rubbish and industrial waste is dumped far out to sea. Sometimes plastic bottles and bags which fall into the sea are brought around by ocean currents. Many marine animals such as turtles and whales swallow such plastic because it looks like food. These animals usually die.

·          Incineration

This is when rubbish is burned at a high temperature. This can produce air pollution. Many modern incinerators have scrubbers or filters added to reduce air emissions into the air.

The best way to reduce pollution is to reuse as many plastic items as you can.
