William Marshal was seen as the greatest soldier and knight of his age. He was born in England in 1145 and spent much of his boyhood with his uncle in Normandy, who made him into a knight. His skill with weaponry quickly became renowned. William did not inherit any land or titles, but through his abilities and skill, he gained the trust of many influential people, including royalty, and gave them his allegiance.

He married Isabella, daughter of Richard de Clare (Strongbow) and Aoife, in 1189. In doing so, he inherited the Lordship of Leinster. In 1199, he persuaded King John to give him the title of Earl of Pembroke. His marriage to Isabella made him an extremely powerful man.

In his final years, William became a great statesman, ensuring peace and stability throughout England. He died on 14 May 1219 and is buried in the Temple Church in London.
