Transport
The transport sector has shown the largest increases in CO2 emissions since 1990, with a total increase of 156% over 1990 levels. However, since 2007 transport emissions have decreased, with a 0.6% decrease between 2007 and 2008 and a 7.7% decrease between 2008 (14.21Mt) and 2009. This decrease reflects the impact of the economic downturn as well as changes in vehicle registration tax and road tax which were introduced in 2008.
Changes in travelling patterns are required across the country from government, industry and individuals to halt this increase in transport related emissions. A description of the extent of emissions from Irish transport modes and how we can reduce emissions are described in the links below.
