In 2009, the transport sector equalled the energy sector as the second largest contributing sector to Ireland ’s GHG emissions (13.12Mt). The transport sector has shown the largest increases in CO2 emissions with a total increase of 156% over 1990 levels. However, since 2007 transport emissions have decreased, with a 0.6% decrease between 2007 and 2008 and a 7.7% decrease between 2008 (14.21 Mt)and 2009. This decrease again reflects the impact of the economic downturn as well as changes in vehicle registration tax and road tax which were introduced in 2008.
