There are many lakes dotted across the Galway landscape that act as havens for a huge variety of wildlife. Lough Corrib and Loughmask are well known limestone lakes that support many wildlife species as well as some rare vegetation. Lough Inagh and Lough Derryclare lie in the Inagh Valley of the Twelve Bens Mountain Range and are very popular for salmon and trout fishing in the summer-time.

Mountbellew Lake and Lough Derg are also renowned waterfowl and water habitats. The longest river in Ireland, the Shannon, also flows through Galway on its journey to the Atlantic Ocean.
