All along the coast of Co. Kerry is dotted with numerous islands and islets. Many of these consist of Old Red Sandstone that was created over 350 million years ago during the Devonian Period, for example the Skellig Islands. These form part of the backbone of peaks that travels through the county, from headlands in the south all the way up to Killarney.
Some of the coastal communities in Kerry and Cork use a type of currach known as a “noamhóg” for their main form of transport. This particular currach is slightly longer than those used in the west.
