Dundalk 2020
The Dundalk 2020 project began in 2007 when a four kilometre square area of Dundalk was created as Ireland’s first Sustainable Energy Zone (SEZ). It includes residential, industrial, commercial, educational, and leisure buildings as well as a hospital. The area is also part-powered by Ireland’s first ‘urban turbine’, which was installed in the grounds of Dundalk Institute of Technology in 2005.
The project has been named ‘Dundalk 2020’ as it aims to reach a high level of sustainability by the year 2020. Targets include:
- 40% energy efficiency improvement in selected buildings within the SEZ
- 20% of all energy used to heat homes and businesses within the SEZ to be generated from renewable sources
- 20% of all electricity used by businesses within the SEZ to be generated from renewable sources
The Dundalk 2020 project aims to showcase the latest innovative technologies, as well as policies and practices, on creating green, sustainable communities that can be applied to other communities across Ireland and Europe.
You can find out more about Dundalk 2020 from our Sustainable Living section, the Dundalk Chamber website, and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) website.
