| The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is an EU environmental legislation aimed at improving our water environment. Member States must aim to achieve good status in all waters by 2015. It requires the production of River Basin Management Plans for all major river catchments in the country. |
The directive is broken up into River Basin District projects. |
| The Marine Institute is responsible for Marine Research, Technology Development and Innovation (RTDI). They assess the economic potential of Ireland's marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry and safeguard our marine environment. |
