Under the Environmental Protection Agencies (EPA) remit is: Implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in Ireland . The EPA reports to the European Commission, develops classification systems, sets standards and devises monitoring programmes. Ongoing assessment of river, lake and groundwater quality and trends. Regular surveys of the water quality of estuaries and near shore coastal waters. Accessing the water quality at designated bathing areas. Operating a national hydrometric programme. A national programme for the collection, analysis and distribution of drinking water quality data. Producing regular reports on Water Quality in Ireland . Local Administration: Along with the EPA, carry out additional groundwater/bathing waters monitoring. The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is an EU environmental legislation aimed at improving our water environment. Member States must aim to achieve good status in all waters by 2015. The Central Fisheries Board has responsibility to advise on conservation, protection, management, development and improvement of inland fisheries and sea angling. The Irish Water Safety Association is responsible for the promotion of water safety in Ireland . It provides instruction in water safety, rescue, swimming and recovery drills.
