Getting to the Station

To the Station by Omnibus!

On the 8th August 1846 an advertisement appeared in the "Carlow Sentinel", stating that

An omnibus was scheduled to travel to and from the Railway Station each day to meet the arrival and departure of each train. It would depart from the Club-House Hotel (later St. Brigid's Hospital), situated at the corner of Dublin Street and Court Place. It was known as the Great Southern and Western Railway Omnibus. Families and gentlemen who were residents of the hotel would be conveyed free of charge. Other inhabitants could avail of the service at a charge of sixpence each from their residence direct to the station. Luggage costs would be included in the fee. A regular and efficient service was guaranteed.

The Railway Omnibus was built in London and was capable of carrying twenty-two passengers.
