Origins of the Youghal Railway Line

The roll-out of the Cork and Youghal Railway seemed threatened by legislative and financial obstacles since its inception. However, inspite of many false starts and much scepticism from observers of the period, the maiden journey over the tracks to Youghal took place in the summer of 1860.

The connection of the coastal town of Youghal, located in the south eastern corner of Cork County, to its capital city was originally intended to be achieved as early as 1845 as part of the proposed development of a railway link between Cork and Waterford. However, the plans proved unfeasible and the cross-country scheme was eventually abandoned in favour of a more economical railway project connecting Waterford and Tramore.
