History

n 1870 The Waterford, Dungarvan and Lismore Railway was incorporated, it was to be the longest and most difficult route of any of the Waterford Railways with long and gruelling grades. The line was open on August 12th 1878 after six years of building.

At Lismore the line used the station of the Fermoy and Lismore Railway, an impressive Portland stone building built on the instructions of the Duke of Devonshire. The rest of the stations were built of local materials.

The Waterford, Dungarvan and Lismore Railway provided a more direct line to Cork for the people of Waterford, before it was built it was necessary to travel via the Waterford and Limerick Line to Line to Limerick and then take the Great Southern and Western Railway south to Cork.
