Lloyd's Register

The Lloyds Register set out detailed specifications on the methods of construction and materials, they surveyed ships to determine how many years the ship should remain in category 'A' before a new survey was required.

Many merchants would only risk cargoes on ships classed by the Lloyd Register. A rating of 12 A1's was the top rating; many ships did not achieve this, but the majority at Whites were classified A1 for twelve years, recognising their high quality.
