Architectural Features of Birr, County Offaly

Birr or Parsonstown

The ancient town of Birr takes its name from the Irish word Birra meaning standing water. The area was part of an area controlled by the O'Carroll family known as Ely O Carroll .

The town became known as Parsons town around 1620 following the granting of the town and surrounding lands to Sir Lawrence Parsons. The town reverted to its ancient name of Birr in 1903.

This maps shows the demesne town as it was in 1822. It is possible to see some of the key features of the town such as Duke Square, Cumberland Steet and Oxmantown Mall.
