© Jack O'NeillOutdoor markets were a common feature of nineteenth and early twentieth century Waterford.
The fish market was located in Peter Street close to Arundel Square. The fish stalls were usually in the charge of women from Tramore, Passage and Dunmore East.
They wore white aprons with shawls of various colours. Here you could be always sure of fresh fish taken from the sea a short few hours before sale. The egg and butter market was located in High Street. The butter was placed on a cool slate in a shady area particularly on warm days. The Arundel Square area of the city was always a hive of activity on market days. You could have your knives and scissors sharpened, your shoes repaired, your harness for your horse repaired, or have a haircut.
