Pawn Shops in Waterford

In 1839 according to Sherman's Directory of Waterford, there were 19 pawn shops in Waterford City. Nine of these were located in Stephen Street. Stephen Street is one of the oldest streets in Waterford and was one of the chief commercial areas of the city for many years. There were also Pawn Shops at various other locations throughout the city such as Bakehouse Lane, Ballybricken, John Street, Lady Lane and Peter Street In 1846 there were only 10 registered pawn shops in the city but by 1877 this had increased again to 12. According to Egan's Guide to Waterford published in 1894 the number of Pawn Shops recorded was 7. The location of the businesses had also changed. Stephen Street was by now in decline and the remaining pawn shops were located mainly around Ballybricken.
