Minute 22nd March 1845 (part 1)

This is the first extant minute of Carlow Poor Law Union. The Minute Book entry begins with the Return of Paupers who were admitted into, or discharged from, the Workhouse, and of the number of sick, and the number born or who died there, during the week ended 22nd of March, 1845. A total of 3 paupers were admitted with 258 remaining. Three paupers were discharged and three died that week. The total number of paupers in the workhouse that week was 255.

Copy of Minutes of Proceedings of the Board of Guardians at a meeting held on Thursday, the 27th day of March, 1845. William Fishbourne was in the chair and other Guardians present were T.T. Vigors, W.R. Lecky, S. Haughton, H. Wally and H. Cary, Esquires. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and signed, The Register Book was produced, examined and authenticated, from No. 382 to No. 385 inclusive, by the signature of the Chairman and counter signature of the Clerk.

The Clerk's Report

The Clerk's Report on the execution of Orders previously made the by Board was read as follows:- It was proposed by W.R. Lecky and seconded by S. Haughton that Colonel Bruen be elected Chairman for the ensuing year. It was proposed by T.T. Vigors and seconded by William Fishbourne that Sir Thomas Butler be elected Vice Chairman for the ensuing year. It was proposed by T.T. Vigors and seconded by S. Haughton that William Fishbourne be elected Chairman for the ensuing year.

The Treasurer Reported that £5-3-4 had been received during the week, that £458 and fourteen shillings was paid out and that the Balance on Account in favour of the Guardians was £867-15-5.

The Clerk Reported that the Cost of Provisions and Necessaries received during the week was £45-13-91/2. The Cost of Provisions and Necessaries consumed was £24-11-51/4. The average cost of a pauper for the week was 1 shilling and 92/5 pennies. The Master's estimate of Provisions and Necessaries required for the ensuing week was examined and Orders were duly made for the following articles:-

400 lbs White Bread @ 1 1/4d per lb,
200 lbs of Brown Bread @ 1d per lb,
40 lbs of Meat @ 3 3/4d per lb,
800 quarts Buttermilk @ 1d per quart,
400 quarts of Sweet milk @ 2d

The establishment account gave details of the salaries for various members of staff in the Workhouse. Doctor Porter's yearly salary to 25th March was £25, 19 shillings and 8 pence. The Matron was called Marianne Rose and her salary amounted to £5, 9 shillings and 10 pence. William Murphy who was the Schoolmaster earned £8, 6 shillings and 8 pence. The Schoolmistress, Mary Anne Noblet earned £4, 2 shillings and 4 pence. John Ward, Porter was paid £2, 3 shillings and 9 pence.
