Conway was born in Nenagh and educated at Blackrock College, and at University College Dublin where he gained his M.Sc., also graduating in medicine in 1921. After winning a studentship to the University of Frankfurt, where he gained a D.Sc., he returned to Ireland to become Professor of Biochemistry at University College Dublin in 1932. For his studies of electrolytes, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1947. In 1967 he received the Boyle Medal of the Royal Dublin Society, the premier award in science in Ireland. He contributed a number of papers to scientific journals in many countries, spoke at international conferences, and was honoured by leading medical and scientific bodies at home and abroad.
