The Dodo, an extinct bird
This Dodo is amongst a very small number that survive in museum collections. Dodos were unique to the island of Mauritius and had become extinct by the late 17th century. This example was acquired by the Royal Irish Academy following an excavation in 1865 in a marshy area of Mauritius which led to the recovery of a small number of Dodo skeletons.

GBS bust (Carlow Co. Library)
This bust of George Bernard Shaw was sculpted by Sava Botzaris (1894-1965) who was a native of the former Yugoslavia. G.B. Shaw's ties with Carlow are particularly noteworthy. His mother Lucinda Elizabeth Gurly was daughter of Thomas Gurly of Carlow. Shaw inherited property in Carlow on his mother's side. He donated the building known as the "Assembly Rooms" in Dublin Street to the Technical Instruction Committee later the Vocational Education Committee. It served as the Carlow Vocational School until the mid 1970's when it became the County Library. Shaw also donated rents from his other properties and all these became part of the Civic Improvement Fund for the town of Carlow.

Madonna Irlanda (1977) by Micheal Farrell (1940-2000)
Oil on canvas 36" x 64.5" Private Collection Madonna Irlanda or The Very First Real Irish Political Picture (1977) by Micheal Farrell (1940-2000) is based on a famous painting by François Boucher (1703-1770) of a courtesan, Marie-Louise O’Murphy (1737-1818), who was favoured by King Louis XV of France. Farrell’s image was controversial for personifying Ireland in such a way, rather than the traditional Madonna-like, pure and maternal persona.
