Convent Schools, Roscommon
Because of the growing demand for education in the town, this fine three storey building was offically opened in 1902, by the Sisters of Mercy. The top storey was used as a Secondary Top. Students were prepared here for the Civil Service, teacher training and the Post Office. Music lessons were also taught here. In 1964 the top storey was removed, and the secondary school which is in the left background of this image was extended and used soley for the purpose of second level education.

Lough Key & Island, Rockingham, Boyle, Co. Roscommon
Lough Key & island is a black and white photo card shot of the rock and folly castle, built by the King family in the early part of the 19th century. This postcard with the flagpole on the tower was unsent. the rock has a romantic, but sad story associated with it - the story of Una Bhan or Winifred the only daughter of Charles Mac Dermot, the last of it's chieftains. A young man named Mac Costelloe fell in love with Una. However, her father refused to allow her to marry into the Mac Costelloe tribe. The MacCostelloes attacked the fortress. Una who was locked in a room to prevent her escape, became ill and died. Her body was buried on Trinity Island. The story goes that Mac Costelloe swam every night to Una's grave, and he too became ill and finding that he was near death, sent a last request to MacDermot, that he be laid to rest beside his beloved Una. The Chief granted this favour and on his death, the bodies of the two lovers were laid beside each other.
