An Individual Response to Landscape

The Glen of the Downs is the largest example in Ireland of a meltwater channel. It was formed by melting water draining from beneath the edge of the Irish Sea ice sheet about 15,000 years ago. Later the ice thawed to form large glacial lakes around Enniskerry and the glen formed an outlet channel to the south. Native woodland now covers the valley slopes.

Rock climbing on the cliffs at Muckross Head

This is a photo of the cliffs at Muckross Head in South West Donegal. This is a popular climbing spot for climbing enthusiasts with its strenuous overhanging routes and splendid horizontal crack climbing. The climbing in Muckross is mostly enjoyed by experienced climbers as it is a tough place to start climbing. The cliffs extend for about 1 kilometre incorporating crack climbs, corner and arête climbs and an array of overhanging problems. Muckross head is a very picturesque place to go climbing with the hills of Slieve League and beyond beautifully placed in its background. Unlike the Burren in co. Clare and the Quarry in Dublin, Muckross Head is completely isolated from the town life. Climbers wishing to stay overnight at the cliffs can camp up on top if the cliffs in a convenient grassy area to pitch a tent.
