Energy Usage in Buildings

Another main way in which the construction industry impacts on climate change is through the amount of energy that is used in buildings and how that energy is used. This is legislated for through the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

Energy consumption in buildings, which involves the use of fossil fuels, contributes to air pollution and the production of greenhouse gases, which ultimately lead to climate change. A lack of adequate insulation, poor or outdated ventilation systems, installation of single glazed windows, or poor construction can cause inefficiencies and losses of energy and heat within a building. This leads to a greater energy requirement, cost and subsequent higher carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The construction industry, through planning, designing and building to the highest standards, will have a big part to play in reducing energy consumption.
