Repair, Maintenance and Improvements

As poor energy use in buildings and consequent impacts on climate change have come to the fore, the construction sector has seen an increase in the number of private, public and commercial buildings that are going down the road of Repair Maintenance and Improvements (RMI).

With regard to housing and office infrastructure, a large proportion of our existing stock throughout many of our towns and cities was built before or during the 1970s and much of this is currently being modernised and improved. In addition, many homeowners are also now modernising or improving their dwellings.

With an increase in awareness about the need for energy efficiency and the availability of grants to improve energy technology/efficiency from organisations such as SEAI, it is likely that future RMI work will need to take this into consideration. This may require investment in new skills and training to allow the construction sector to respond to this demand.
