In 1994, the Dublin Region was divided into four areas. These are Dublin City, Fingal, South Dublin and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.
Dublin City includes the city centre, Cabra, Glasnevin, Finglas, Ballymun, Artane, Whitehall, Donaghmede, Clontarf, Rathmines, Pembroke, Crumlin, Kimmage, Drimnagh and Ballyfermot.
Fingal County includes the areas of Howth, Malahide, Kinsaley, Balgriffin, Portmarnock, Baldoyle, Sutton, Mulhuddart, Castleknock, Blanchardstown, Balbriggan, Rush, Lusk, Balscadden, Garristown, Donabate, Swords and Santry.
South Dublin includes Lucan, Palmerstown, Clondalkin, Newcastle, Rathcoole, Saggart, Tallaght, Templeogue and Rathfarnham.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown includes the areas of Dundrum, Glencullen, Stillorgan, Blackrock, Dun Laoghaire and Ballybrack.
This change was brought in by the Local Government Act, 1991, because there were so many people living in Dublin.
