What to Do

Let's have a look at a few more aspects of what makes Kerry special, starting with the geography of the county.

Mountains

Carrantuohil on the Iveragh peninsula is the highest mountain in Ireland.

It measures 3,414 feet high and forms part of MacGillycuddy Reeks.

Because of its height, it is a very popular destination for mountain climbers.

Mount Brandon on the Dingle peninsula is Ireland's second highest peak.

It is 3,127 feet in height and is a pilgrimage site because of its close association with Saint Brendan, the patron saint of Kerry.

Lakes

The most well-known lakes in Kerry are located close to Killarney.

There are three main lakes situated there; Lough Leane, Muckross Lake (which is also known as Middle Lake) and the Upper Lake.

Lough Leane is the largest of these three lakes.

The lakes are a very popular tourist attraction because of their beauty and their suitability for trout and salmon fishing.

Population

According to the census in 2006, the population of County Kerry is 139,835. 70,641 of these are males while the remaining 69,194 are females. Kerry's population is roughly 12% of the whole population for the province of Munster (1,173,340). Kerry saw a population growth of 5.5 per cent in the period 2002-2006. 32.5 per cent of the population is under 25-years-old.
