Plans and Pictures

The pupils are asked detailed questions about the floor plan of a bungalow and then, at home, they will attempt to draw a plan of the ground floor of their own home.

Central teaching point here is the concept of aerial perspective. Children also need to understand that a plan is a scaled down representation of something larger. They will need to know that symbols can be used to show particular areas. For example, a symbol for a toilet might be a small picture of a toilet. If they have not done so recently, drawing a plan of the classroom might be a good 'warm-up' activity. They should be reminded of the correct way to indicate a door and a window and shown how blocks of colour might be used to indicate places, for example the class library or the sink area.
