In this module the children have learned about the growth and development of villages and towns: -about isolated and clustered settlement. The development of new roads and their effect on the landscape would be examined here. Building Materials and processes are also examined.

Sources Included:

(1) Simple CountyMaps showing the location of towns and villages.

(2) The County and Urban Development plans and their accompanying maps - Village development plans.

(3) Aerial photograph of urban and rural settlements in the County.

(4) Postcards showing street schemes and rural landscape.

(5) Brochures from Estate Agents showing housing developments. For this module site plans would be particularly interesting. The children could also be directed to the types of materials used - brick, concrete block, timber, P.V.C., use of tiles or slates, materials used in site finishing - paths, tarmacadam, green areas, farm houses and farm building could be also shown.

(6) Detailed maps showing the development of new roads, roundabouts and flyovers, motorways, bypasses. The local authority should be able to supply extracts if the library does not currently hold all sources.
