Romanticism 19th Century

Romanticism was viewed as a rise against the norms of the Enlightenment in relation to society and politics. It was also understood as a reaction against the highly scientific reasoning applied to nature. Romanticism emphasised particular human emotions such as intense fear and awe; particularly those emotions experienced from surrounding nature.

Examples:
Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), Wanderer Above the Mist, 1818
