Drawing begins with a line or a mark on a page. Everybody has their own mark and individual style, however, one can always learn and improve their drawing skills.

 

Mark Making

Begin by making as many different marks using as many different materials and tools. 

Marks:

Straight lines

Curved lines

Heavy lines

Soft lines

Scratchy lines

Jagged lines

Squiggles

Circles

Spirals

Vertical

Diagonal

Horizontal

Cross-hatching

Graphite pencils

Colouring pencils

Chalk

Charcoal

Markers

Oil pastels

Drawing Techniques and Tactics

  • Draw using the opposite hand to the one that you normally write with
     
  • Attach a piece of charcoal to the end of a willow stick using a piece of tape and draw on paper on the floor
     
  • Draw using a stick dipped in ink
     
  • Make subtractive drawings by covering a page in charcoal or chalk and then using an eraser to make marks on the surface, removing the charcoal
