Clare County Librarys Summer Reading Challenge kicks off on July 1st
Clare County Librarys Summer Reading Challenge kicks off on July 1st in all 15 branches throughout the county. Children are invited to join this years Mythical Maze themed promotion of books and reading set to run until the end of August. Mythical Maze challenges young readers to find their way around a labyrinth that introduces them to fantastical creatures from the world of legend and mythology.
The Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at children aged 4 to 11, and it is a fun way to encourage children and families to read in the long break from school and it is free to join. Children will receive a special Mythical Maze poster, and as they read six books or more over the summer, they will collect stickers, bookmarks, wristbands and other incentives along the way. Watch out - some stickers are scratch and sniff!
Everyone in the family gets caught up in the fun and there will be a celebration ceremony for all children who complete the Challenge in one of Clares five main regional libraries in the autumn featuring childrens entertainment and some excellent spot prizes, with the emphasis on reading for pleasure providing the backdrop to all activities.
Last year, almost 1,000 children in County Clare participated in the Summer Reading Challenge. Staff at Clare County Library are confident that numbers joining will be even higher this year and are looking forward to welcoming you to take up the Challenge at your nearest library in the coming weeks. The initiative is an excellent way for libraries and schools to work together to prevent the 'summer reading dip' that can occur when schools close for summer holidays.
Designed to have maximum child appeal the Summer Reading Challenge is free and fun and is highly motivating. It is not a competition but a personal challenge within a particular time frame which offers reading inspiration and incentives to encourage children into libraries.
You will find additional resources on The Reading Agency website and the Clare Library website.
