Positive Ageing Week: 1st-9th October

This year, from Wednesday 1st of October to Thursday 9th October, Age Action celebrates 12 years of Positive Ageing Week and both young and old coming out in force in their towns and communities to celebrate ageing in a positive light. Positive Ageing Week over the last number of years has expanded rapidly due to the enthusiasm of older people and their communities who have embraced the idea and made it their own.

Clare County Library is delighted to count itself among the many organisations that embrace Positive Ageing Week and will celebrate it with a host of activities again this year. Seán Lemass Public Library in Shannon will transform into a movie theatre on Tuesday 7th October at 11am when they screen 'The Queen' starring Helen Mirren - this 2006 film portrays Queen Elizabeth II in the aftermath of Princess Diana's death in 1997. Helen Mirren's Oscar-winning performance is riveting. All are welcome to come along, have a cuppa and enjoy the film.

Also on Tuesday 7th October, at 3pm, Kilrush Public Library will host a Crochet Workshop by Mary Reynolds. Mary, who is very talented at a wide variety of crafts, will give instructions on how to crochet flowers and other small crochet projects. All are welcome. You can contact the library directly at 065-9051504 for more information.

A series of nutritional talks will begin in Killaloe Public Library on Wednesday 1st October at 7pm and continue for the following three Wednesdays, 8th, 15th and 22nd of October at the same time. Given by Nutritional Therapist Olivia Beck, the talks will deal with issues such as reflux, heartburn, bloating, flatulence, indigestion, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Celiac Disease, gluten sensitivity, Crohn's Disease and Diverticulitis. More information can be obtained by contacting the library directly at 061-376062.

Regular computer skills classes run in many of Clare County Librarys branches. These classes are free of charge, as are all of our events for Positive Ageing Week, and everyone is welcome. Contact your local library for more information or visit Clare County Library's website.

During Positive Ageing Week, and throughout the month of October, Clare County Library will take a small section of the Local Studies Library on tour when library staff will visit nursing homes and day centres throughout the county. A selection of Clare Champion newspapers from times past will be transported, along with photographs and books, so that extracts can be read and discussed, evoking memories of times past. The newspapers are part of a complete set of Clare Champions dating back to 1903 which are housed at the Local Studies Centre on Harmony Row, Ennis. They are available to the public for reference use.

Bluebird Care, firm supporter of Positive Ageing Week, has launched a Food for the Soul cookbook which will be available to borrow from selected branches of Clare County Library from the 1st October. Written by Chef Gary OHanlon and produced by Bluebird Care, this book will teach you how to eat yourself healthy with a particular emphasis on nutrition for older people, people with disabilities and people recovering from illness. A donation from each book sold will be made to Active Retirement Ireland.

Remember too that Senior Citizens can avail of free library membership in all of Clare County Librarys branches. So, during Positive Ageing Week, or at any time of the year, why not join your local branch? Youll discover a whole world of books, CDs, DVDs and more. You may even join one of our many clubs including book clubs and scrabble clubs. A whole new experience awaits you! For more information on these events and much more visit Clare County Library's website or phone 065-6821616.
