Children's Book Festival!

Books can be dangerous! They could change your life!!

This month we have arranged an exciting series of events and activities in our libraries across the county!

We hope to encourage children to enjoy the experience and the magic of reading!

Authors Benji Bennett, Jackie Burke, and Poets Michael Creagh and Mark Roper will visit. There will be arts and crafts workshops, an edible cake competition, writing workshops for teens, colouring competitions, and a film screening too! You can also pick up a free copy of stories are for everyone current recommended reads for children of all ages.

Theatre for all! To kick off Children's Book Festival, we invited almost 1,000 people to Circus Stachamoose a puppet show which took place in The Watergate Theatre last Saturday. Well done to all our young readers who completed Mythical Maze our reading challenge, and we hope you and your families enjoyed the show! Castlecomer Library

Computer Classes for beginners begin on Wednesday 22nd October from 2-4pm. Free to all, whether unemployed, retired or lacking in basic skills.

Course details - Basics – This includes setting up and using email, using online banking, paying car tax, transferring photos to the computer Advanced – This includes the basics, plus more detail on the topics. Booking flights online, buying a T.V license, using Picasa.

Team Hope Christmas Shoebox appeal. Drop in your filled shoebox this year before November 10th.

Autumn Crafts for kids! A session for boys and girls aged 6-12 yrs, after school today Wednesday 8th. Halloween Crafts for boys and girls aged 6-12 yrs, on Saturday 25th October 11am – 1pm. Only €2 per session.

Mad Poetry for Kids! Poet Michael Creagh will meet with schoolchildren before the Halloween Break! His side splitting Poems will make you laugh!

Film Screening. We will screen a film by award winning film maker, Pat Collins called Silence on Tuesday October 21st at 6.30pm. Silence tells the story of Eoghan, a soundman from Tory Island who wants to record his perception of silence; natural sound free of manmade noise. On his journey through the West of Ireland we are treated to some awe-inspiring shots of beautiful and remote locations. Free, all are welcome to attend.

Benefit 4 Computer Classes for adults will take place in Thomastown library starting soon. The course will take place from 5-7pm every Wednesday night for 4 weeks. Limited places available please contact Thomastown library to book your place 056 7794331.

Book Club. Thomastown Book Club meet up on the first Wednesday of every month at 2.15pm.  The choice for October is Women in Love by D.H. Lawrence. Next meeting Wednesday November 5th. Drop in for a chat and a cuppa no need to book.

Mystery Books! We have boxes of mystery books in the library. All of the titles are wrapped up tight, with their barcodes written on the outside so we can issue them to your library card. The idea is that you’ll go home with something you’d never normally pick up yourself, and hopefully find a new favourite author in the process. And it’s always nice to get an unexpected present!

Crafty Crew meet every Wednesday from 10.30 to 12.00, if you would like to meet, knit, sew, crochet, embroider or any craft PLEASE come along for chat and a cuppa.

Exhibition space available for any art, craft or memorabilia.

City Library John’s Quay

Free Computer Classes will be held in City Library shortly, as part of the initiative to “Get Ireland Online”.

We have places available on Wednesday mornings from 10.30-12.30pm and also on Friday mornings 10-12.30pm.

Both classes are limited to 4 people. Classes will be held over four weeks.

World War Poetry. Popular local poet, Mark Roper visited the City Library on Thursday 2nd October to discuss World War pots and poetry. A large crowd, both young and old attended the event, and Mark led a very interesting and intriguing discussion on the topic.  

Savour Kilkenny Edible Book Competition. Calling all secondary school students in Kilkenny: Create a cake-based edible book for Savour Kilkenny! Last year, we were blown away by the talent and creativity of the local students – can you top it this year???

Registration forms & rules are available on www.kilkennylibrary.ie  and from all library branches. Closing date for return of forms: 8pm Wednesday 15th  October. Edible book entries to be brought to the City Library between 9-12.30pm on Wednesday 22nd October.

The Quay Book Club. We will meet Wednesday 29th October at 11.30am to discuss Rebecca by  Daphne Du Maurier. All are welcome to join, and you can drop in any month!

Parlez vous Francais? Even un peu? Do come along to our next French Conversation group on Friday 17th  October at 11.30am for a chat and a coffee.

Ms Readathon forms are now available in City Library, John’s Quay.

Team Hope Shoebox Appeal. City Library is a designated drop off point for shoeboxes again this year. Last date we will accept them is Thursday 6th November.

Children’s Book Festival 2014. The Library has  many events scheduled to celebrate Children’s Book Festival 2014, the following list is just a few of the events taking place;-

Benji Bennett and Jackie Burke, two very popular and well know children’s authors will visit the library and read extracts from their current books.

Writing Workshops for 6th Class students; Short Story Competition for 4th, 5th and 6th classes;  Drawing/Colouring Competition for Snr Infants to 3rd class students.

World Mental Health Day – 10th October 11:00am. This FREE workshop examines the importance of activity for your Mental Health with Pauline Cunningham, Waterford Sports Partnership.

Caroline Caffrey of Healing Prana Holistic Centre will give a talk on how holistic therapies can help you mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually @ 12:15pm.

Internet Skills for Job Hunting. Searching in job websites and submitting online applications; Viewing sample CV’s and cover letters online - FREE.

Britannica Online is now available to all members from home! Just use your library card to log on! Useful for schoolchildren, teachers, third level students. Use it to answer general reference queries and for information for school and university projects.

One Click Digital. Download adult or children’s audio-books, suitable for smartphone, PC ipad or tablet!

Zinio Magazines. You can also download FREE, from a selection of 25 magazines each week! Hello, National Geographic, Photography, Gardening, Cookery….the list is wide ranging. Not to be missed! All you need is your library card.
