Library Ireland Week takes place from 17th to 24th November. The week raises the profile of libraries, and gives us the opportunity to showcase our resources, facilities, events, contacts and services through different programs and events. The theme of this years Library Ireland Week is Open for Business, and the focus is on the role of libraries in serving the business community and in supporting entrepreneurship, job skills and creation, innovation, and much more. Use your local Library....and see what we can offer you!

This month we look forward to offering members our 24/7 online Service, including access to Newspapers, Photos, music online books and magazines! In our Branches, we offer free computer courses, colour printing, scanning, craft exhibitions and workshops, book clubs for adults and kids, school visits, Irish and French conversation groups and adult literacy classes.

Bibliotherapy- The power of words- Read yourself well...now available in the library.  The collection includes books on many of the common psychological problems people experience, (eg) depression, behavioural problems, eating disorders, anger, bullying, bereavement, self-esteem issues, teenagers sibling rivalry.

Crafty Crew meet every Wednesday from 10.30 to 12.00, if you would like to meet, knit, sew, crochet, embroider or any craft come along for chat and a cuppa.

We have boxes of mystery books in the library. All of the titles are wrapped up tight, with their barcodes written on the outside so we can issue them to your library card.  The idea is that you’ll go home with something you’d never normally pick up yourself, and hopefully find a new favourite author in the process.  And it’s always nice to get an unexpected present!

Loughboy Library News

Christmas is Coming-watch out for some great seasonal events at Loughboy Library to kick off your festive season.

We are delighted to welcome local seannachai Jim Maher to present a Family Christmas Storytime on Friday Dec 5th at 6.30pm.

Our resident Writers Group will host a Christmas Themed Reading on Thursday Dec 11th. Family, friends, fellow writers and the public are very welcome to attend. The Writers meet on Thursdays at 2pm.

Computer Basics-free classes continue at Loughboy Library. Booking at 7794176.

Class Visits-take place on Friday mornings from 10am including an introduction to the services provided by the library with storytime and activities to suit all ages.

OneClickDigital-you can download audio books from the library website www.kilkennylibrary.ie. Demonstration of this free facility takes place on Wednesdays at 2pm. Hundreds of novels and factual titles are available. Very useful for book clubs and class readers.

Ferrybank Library

Photographic Exhibition – Currently on display is a wonderful photographic exhibition by Sarah Nix from Clondalkin Camera Club. Some lovely local scenes. Well worth a look – not to be missed.

Six Book Challenge – The annual Six Book Challenge invites people to pick six reads and record their reading in a diary to get a certificate when challenge is completed.  It also encourages participants to go online to share their reading choices and look for their next read.  Register in the library during the month of November.

PACT Youth Project – handmade items from €1 for sale in aid of the PACT Youth Project. A percentage of the profits will be donated to the Solas Centre. Dates for your calendar :- Saturday 22nd and Saturday 29th November.  Time: 10:00am to 1:00pm

FREE Art Class for Adults – every Friday afternoon at 3:00pm No experience or materials necessary. Places limited, booking essential.

A Range of Services – Remember your local library offers photocopying, scanning, internet and Wi-Fi.  We also have a community notice board for promotion of local events.  We also hold a range of forms including passport and application forms for driver theory test – you can also do a practice test in the library before the real thing.

Regular Events – On a weekly basis we have patchwork quilting, knitting and crochet, parent & toddler morning, computer classes and creative writing. In addition the Irish Circle meets every second Tuesday at 2:30pm.   Our Adult Book Club meets last Wednesday of each month.  All are welcome.  Our Junior Book Club for 4th, 5th and 6th classes take place the first Tuesday of each month at 3:30pm. New members welcome!

City Library John’s Quay

Science Week @ City Library

A large group of students from CBS and St. Kieran’s visited us on Wednesday morning for a talk on Science and Global Engineering as a career with Paul MacDonald from, Kildare County Council National Roads Office. Paul’s talk was fast paced and futuristic, with discussion on mechanical engineering, sustainability, energy, and the importance of innovation in the engineering world.

All students enjoyed the talk.

Budding scientists and engineers – did you know you as a member of the library, you can borrow New Scientist from our online magazine collection to read on your smart phone, tablet/PC through our website?!!


The 12 books of Christmas:

Our Christmas Family reading challenge begins Tuesday 2nd December.

Readers of all ages are invited to join in our challenge, either as a family or as individuals - borrow and read any 12 books between Tuesday December 2nd  and Sat. 3rd January.

Sign up and collect your card from City Library from Tuesday 2nd December.

Anyone completing the challenge will be entered into a raffle in January.


6 Book Challenge

The Six Book Challenge has been run successfully by Kilkenny Library Service over the last few years and is about to kick off again!

The Challenge invites less confident and lapsed readers to read six books between now and the end of April 2015 and record their reading in a diary in order to receive incentives, a certificate and the chance to enter a prize draw.

Readers choose their books so each person can read at their own individual level. Those with visual impairment are invited to participated using audiobooks.

The idea is both to get people into reading (in many cases for the first time) and to make reading a habit.

Dates to note:

Open registration & short introduction in the library from 2-8pm on Wednesday 19th November.

This includes setting up library membership, library tour, 6 book challenge beginners pack. (Phone Aisling on 056 779 4174 to book groups)

Closing date for Registration: Friday 28th November

Castlecomer Library

Science week went off with a bang last week! We welcomed pupils from Firoda NS and Presentation Convent to learn about robotics.

Senior students from Castlecomer community School attended a lecture on Science and Engineering, and the exciting prospects in the future for those who make those career choices. We thank Paul McDonald Engineer with Kildare Co council, and LearnIt educational company for these workshops.

Great War Lecture by Dr Maire Downey was attended by over 100 people, many whose relatives fought in the trenches. Poignant letters from young men were shared, along with photos, medals, a whistle used to send men to battle, and binoculars from the period.

Christmas Crafts for kids!

LilyO’Neill and Sadhbhin Gibson will host Christmas decoration workshops on Saturdays December 6th and 13th. 12 places for boys and girls age 5-12 yrs, €2, book soon!

Thomastown Library

Book club: ‘Harvest’ by Jim Crace is the book club choice for this month.  Next book club meeting is Wednesday December 3rd at 2.15pm.  As this will be our Christmas meeting it is proposed to bring a little festive cheer.  Anyone attending  if you could bring a small food contribution to have during the meeting.  Everyone welcome to drop in and enjoy a cuppa a chat and a bite, looking forward to seeing you there. 

Science and engineering lecture

Two classes from Grennan College visited the library this week.  The sixth years attended a talk with Paul McDonald, engineer with Kildare County Council on Tuesday and they enjoyed a very informative talk on Paul’s engineering work that has taken him all over the world.  They also received some very good career advice in the engineering field.

The 5th year students called to the library on Wednesday for a talk on  library services available and for advice on searching for information on their chosen history topic for leaving cert.
