Library Ireland Week: 17-24 November

Library Ireland Week runs from November 17th-24th 2014. Every year the library service celebrates its worth during this week, a week that raises the profile of libraries and information service professionals and gives libraries and information services the opportunity to showcase their resources, facilities, events, contacts and services through different programs and events. The theme for the week this year is 'Open for Business'. This theme puts a focus on the role of libraries in serving the business community and in supporting entrepreneurship, job skills and creation, innovation, and much more. The staff at Clare County Library is very much looking forward to engaging with local businesses across the county, throughout the week and beyond.

Throughout Library Ireland Week there will be an emphasis on what the library has to offer to local business people and their businesses as well as advice for entrepreneurs and career and employment advice for those who are seeking guidance on what path is best for them to follow.

Among the many events planned there will be a roadshow presented by the INOU (Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed) at the De Valera Public Library in Ennis on Tuesday, 18th November from 2-4.30pm where you can find out about their free and confidential services. Also on Tuesday, 18th November at 7pm Anne Behan McConnell will visit the Scariff Public Library to give a talk on entrepreneurship and how she started and developed her own successful business, Áine Knitwear. Special story time sessions for children will take place in many branches throughout the week. There will also be book displays on the relevant topics in all branches.

The library service will also launch a new project called 'Library Champions' whereby they will invite members of the public to become a library champion by writing a paragraph on what it is they love about libraries or how libraries have helped them in life. The aim of the project is to champion libraries and promote them as a place for all; a place where everyone is welcome and can avail of equal opportunities, regardless of age, gender, race, class or education and for people to become aware of the library as being their resource and their gateway to knowledge, leisure and pleasure. Both the Mayor of Clare, Councillor John Crowe, and the Mayor of Ennis, Councillor Johnny Flynn, have already been enlisted as Library Champions. More information can be obtained from your local library.

Also throughout the week Clare County Library invites you to visit any, or all, of their fifteen branches throughout the county and rediscover what is available to you from your local library service. Youll discover a whole world of books, CDs, DVDs and more. Surf the internet or check your email at their free internet access points. You could begin tracing your family tree at the Local Studies Centre. You may even join one of the many clubs including children's, adult and teenage book clubs and scrabble clubs. Membership is free for pre-school, primary, secondary and third level students and for senior citizens. Remember, it is never too early or too late to join your local library! A whole new experience awaits you!
