A morning of laughter, stories, face painting and madness occurred in Carlow Central Library on Saturday 21st March when over 500 people visited the library, within a three hour period, for the launch of the first phase of Carlow County Library 'Read with me Family Literacy Programme 2015'.

Mary Howard BA (Hons) ECCE, had lots of practical advice and useful tips for parents in relation to improving the reading skills of their little ones and explained the new 'Reading with your Little One Workshops' taking place this coming April. "This workshop will take place over three consecutive Saturdays and will look at the Why, What and How of reading with your child. Places on these workshops are limited" explained Mary, "so make sure you contact Carlow Library if you are interested."

Also available on the day was a brand new collection of hundreds of new titles for children from age 0-6. Carlow Library Service worked closely with Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board's Adult Learning Centre in Carlow to develop, setup and resource this family literacy collection. Both Deirdre and Tara were on hand that morning handing out treats and providing lots of information in relation to their programmes.

"This morning's event was a great success" beamed Jannette O'Brien, Carlow Library "and was organised as part of our 'Read with me' family literacy programme. This initiative is part of a national Right To Read campaign where the public library creates a culture of reading and literacy for all children in our community and that they experience the pleasure of books as part of everyday family life, right from the start! We hope that more and more children become involved and use their local library as it is often the first introduction children have to one of the best free resources for their minds that they have on their doorstep - their local library."

Many thanks to all who took the time to call into the Library on Saturday as well as invaluable volunteers Lynda Kelly and Eleanor Peters who gave up their time to ensure that our family fun day was a great success.
