Carlow and Tullow libraries join Muinebheag in providing self-service for customers
Carlow and Tullow libraries join Muinebheag Library in the provision of Self Service for customers through radio frequency identification (RFID). Keeping abreast of technology is now part and parcel of running an efficient and modern public library service and the new Self Service machines complement the existing ICT infrastructure in Carlow Library Service. The busiest branch, Carlow Central Library houses two machines and Tullow has one. Muinebheag Library also has one and almost 70% of check-outs are now handled by the machine, freeing up library staff to give a more personal service customers when needed. With a huge volume of books and other items issued each day, approximately 200,000 per year the Self Service machines will mean no queues, empowered customers and faster service.
Library staff have embraced the new machines as an aid to their work in an increasingly busy environment where the roles and duties of library personnel have broadened to include many non-traditional elements.
