Vacancy: Assistant Librarian RCSI Library, Beaumont Hospital

Location: Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9

Contract: Short Term Contract (6 months)

Objective: To be responsible for the day to day management of the RCSI Library in Beaumont hospital including, supervising a team of dedicated paraprofessional staff, and interacting with a wide range of departments within the hospital and college.

Responsibilities include:

  • Day to day management of RCSI Library Beaumont Hospital, overseeing the management of the Service Desk, and co-ordinating activities with the main RCSI library.
  • Supervising and training library paraprofessional staff.
  • Providing a consultation service to staff and students, including comprehensive reference, literature and systematic review searching assistance in health sciences disciplines.
  • Providing information skills training for hospital library users, and participating in the main RCSI Library information skills training and Beaumont Hospital Staff Learning and Development programmes.
  • Providing information and outreach services in a clinical setting including but not limited to: library resources and services, literature searching, document delivery services.
  • Managing hospital library collections in collaboration with the Information Resources Librarian, including evaluating and selecting resources to meet the dynamic needs of campus research, clinical and teaching activities.
  • Developing supporting documents for information skills training, library staff training, hospital library policies and procedures, and content for the hospital library website.
  • Library administration including but not limited to: rotas, accounts, monitoring library space and facilities, compiling and analysing statistical and management information as required.
  • Maintaining working relationships with hospital and college departments to ascertain and meet user requirements, and collaborating with the library team to deliver timely, effective and relevant services.
  • Monitoring and evaluating trends in hospital library management, services and new technologies and making recommendations appropriate to the hospital library.
  • Representing the library on internal or external committees as required.
  • Ensuring that all RCSI policies and procedures including RCSI Health and Safety regulations are adhered to.
  • Undergoing programmes of training and development (CPD) as may be required from time to time.
  • Representing the best interests of the Library/RCSI at all times.
  • Performing such other appropriate duties as may be required from time to time.

Person Specification:

Required

  • A Primary Degree and a recognised postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Science.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem solving, management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take the initiative, work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Recent supervisory experience in a library setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and present instructional material.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide reference, literature and systematic review searching assistance in specialised subject areas.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a hospital or academic or health sciences library.
  • Strong customer service focus.
  • IT skills appropriate to the position.
  • An innovative approach to hospital/health library services.
  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
