Engineers' Week 2016 at Carlow County Library Service
Carlow County Library
28th Feb - 5th March
Carlow County Library Service once again participated in the annual National Engineers Week Project. Engineers Week is the annual campaign to inspire the next generation of engineers and excite students about the possibilities a career in engineering can offer.
This year a suite of events were rolled out across the Carlow Library Network catering for students from Junior infants to Senior Cycle in Secondary school.
"Engineers Week 2016 was a terrific success again this year", says John Shortall, County Librarian, "and there were several events hosted in all of our branches." Expert career and practical advice was given to senior Cycle Students by Engineers David Wilson and Jamie Cassels.
Software Engineers from UNUM Ireland, which serves as a strategic software development and services center for UNUM US, enthralled senior cycle students in Carlow Town and were delighted to welcome two visiting engineers from the USA as part of the Unum workshops.
The little ones had terrific fun learning about energy through 'The Amazing Energy Game' with Fionnghuala Ryan, environmental Awareness officer with Carlow County Council.
Once again, Wesleys Workshops stole the show during our week long programme. Wesley Watchorn, technology teacher from Carlow CBS, and his first year students hosted three workshops, where students from Killeshin, Bishop Foley, and Askea Boys Primary Schools, learned technology and engineering techniques and tips. Combining the Library and Engineering themes, the CBS students helped attendees to make an acrylic bookmark. All participants had the opportunity to use a 'strip heater' which is a special piece of engineering equipment that makes acrylic malleable at an exact line resulting in bendable acrylic. "We are delighted to participate in Engineers Week", says Wesley Watchorn form Carlow CBS, "its a fantastic opportunity for our students to become teachers for a day and share their new skills and knowledge with their peers."
Carlow County Library Service engages in many of National programmes throughout the year. If you are interested in learning more, contact your Local branch, find us on Facebook, have a look online at www.carlowlibrary.ie or watch your local Nationalist for upcoming events.
