Brehon laws governed everyday life in Ireland right up until 1607. These laws were written in pre-Christian times. Brehons (judges) gave out fines and decided laws on marriage and divorce.
Under Brehon law, women could divorce easily and be given a type of alimony. They held an almost equal status with men and could preside over feasts and celebrations.
