Department of Irish Folklore Archive UCD

The Department of Irish Folklore, University College Dublin, houses the National Folklore Archives, initiated by the Department’s predecessor, the Irish Folklore Commission (1935-1971). The Collection, which continues to be developed and expanded, is one of the largest of its kind internationally. It documents Irish oral literature, historical tradition, folk music, song and dance, custom and belief, material culture and Irish life generally. It comprises some four thousand bound manuscripts, thousands of hours of audio and video recordings and approximately 70,000 images, in addition to a specialist library of almost 50,000 printed books.
