Abbeyleix Heritage House

Abbeyleix Heritage House covers the history of Co. Laois from prehistory to the present day. Among the subjects covered is the conversion of the warring tribes of Laois from paganism to Christianity and the beginnings of the monasticism in the county. Other exhibits chart the history of Laois from the Norman invasion of the 12th century to the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII to the first plantations.

The modern era includes the landlord system and the arrival of new industries in the 18th and 19th centuries including carpet making. Exported carpets from Abbeyleix were used to furnish the staterooms of the doomed liner R.M.S. Titanic sunk in 1912.
