This catalogue of the museum of the Royal Irish Academy is written in three volumes. The first volume was published in 1857, the second in 1861 and the third in 1862. A total of £250 was given by the Royal Irish Academy to fund the project,
and membership subscription also contributed to the production of this catalogue.

The task of writing the catalogue was undertaken by William Robert Wilde, the secretary of foreign correspondence to the Royal Irish Academy. An introduction to the work is provided by the President, Rev. James H. Todd.

The first volume contains descriptions of Stone, Earthen and Vegetable Materials and is illustrated with 157 wood engravings. These were drawn by Mr. Du Noyer and Mr. Wakeman, and were cut by Mr. Hanlon and Mr. Oldham.

The second volume contains descriptions of Animal Materials (horn, leather, bone, ivory, textiles), as well as the Metallic Materials of copper and bronze. The catalogue is complemented with 377 wood engravings. As in the first volume, these were drawn by Mr. Du Noyer and Mr. Wakeman, and were cut by Mr. Hanlon and Mr. Oldham.

Volume three contains a catalogue of gold objects.
