This parish lies in the south west corner of the barony of Abbeyshrule. It is bounded on the west and north by Shrule parish on the east by Forgney and on the south by Ballymore in County Westmeath. 

Rathcline Rath Claon

"inclining or sloping fort"

This parish is situated in and occupies the North portion of Rathcline barony. It is surrounded by the parish of Cashel in this barony, by th parishes of Kilcommock and Killashee in Moydow barony and by the parishes of Cloontuskert, Kilbride and Kilteevan in Ballintobber Barony, Co. Roscommon.. It contains 12,883 acres, which includes 1,820 acres of Lough Ree, 96 acres of Lough Bannow and 93 acres of the River Shannon. Within the parish boundary is Inchenagh, an island of sixty acres.
